Why Group Therapy Might Be Exactly What You Need
Therapy is often thought of as a one-on-one experience, and that format can be incredibly powerful. But it’s not the only way to receive support, process what you’re going through, or feel less alone.
As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS), I’ve spent years supporting individuals through major life transitions, identity shifts, and emotional overwhelm. And over time, I’ve seen just how meaningful group therapy can be—both as a space for connection and as a tool for growth.
There’s something uniquely healing about being in a room (or Zoom square) with people who just get it. The simple act of hearing “me too” can reduce shame, increase self-compassion, and open the door to real change.
What Makes Group Therapy Valuable?
1. You realize you’re not alone.
Whether you’re managing a new diagnosis, navigating a life transition, or just trying to figure out what healing looks like, you’re not the only one. Being in community with others reminds us that our struggles are valid and often shared.
2. Group offers perspective and validation.
There’s something incredibly powerful about hearing your own story reflected in someone else’s words. Groups provide space for learning through shared experience, not just strategies or worksheets.
3. It’s a space for connection, not comparison.
Group therapy is designed to be safe, structured, and facilitated in a way that fosters support, not judgment. Many people enter group therapy afraid they’ll feel “behind” or “too much.” What do they usually discover? Relief.
4. You gain tools and support.
While many groups include practical tools or strategies, the emotional support that comes from shared vulnerability is what often sticks with people most. Growth happens when we feel seen, understood, and supported as we try new ways of being.
5. It’s often more affordable than individual therapy.
Let’s be honest—not everyone has the financial flexibility for weekly one-on-one therapy. Group therapy is often more cost-effective, making mental health support more accessible for many people without sacrificing depth or connection.
Who Is Group Therapy For?
Anyone navigating a new diagnosis or life transition.
Whether it’s ADHD, postpartum, or something else entirely—processing big changes with others who get it can make things feel less overwhelming and isolating.
Those who feel stuck in perfectionism or emotional overwhelm.
Group therapy offers a safe space to challenge internal narratives, share what’s really going on, and begin practicing more compassion and flexibility with yourself.
People craving connection, not just clinical advice.
Some of the most healing moments in group therapy happen between members, not from the therapist’s tips, but from the simple experience of feeling understood without needing to explain everything.
Anyone who wants to learn and grow in community.
If you’ve ever felt like healing or self-work was something you had to figure out alone, group therapy can offer a completely different—and incredibly validating—experience.

Final Thought:
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support.
Sometimes healing begins simply by being heard—especially by people who understand exactly what you mean.
