Self-Care That Matters: Prioritizing Yourself Without Guilt

Self-care is more than just pampering yourself with spa days and shopping sprees—it’s a vital practice for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Yet, many people struggle with guilt when prioritizing themselves, often putting their own needs last until they feel exhausted and burned out.

I’m Rachel Tenny, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS), and throughout my career, I’ve seen so many people—myself included—struggle with prioritizing self-care. Over the years, I’ve learned that self-care isn’t just about finding time for rest—it’s about setting sustainable boundaries, recognizing our own needs, and creating routines that genuinely support our well-being.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is the intentional practice of nurturing your well-being in a way that promotes long-term health and balance. It can help prevent burnout, improve resilience, and provide you with the tools to navigate daily stressors effectively. True self-care isn’t about consumerism—it’s about engaging in habits and activities that restore and empower you.

A Brief History of Self-Care

Originally, self-care was a medical concept aimed at helping patients prevent illness and manage their health through practices like proper nutrition and exercise. During the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements, activists adopted self-care as a means of preventing burnout and sustaining their work. Over time, the term has been monetized, often linked to expensive products or luxury experiences. However, self-care was never meant to be a privilege—it is an essential practice for everyone.

By returning to the true purpose of self-care, we can shift our mindset from indulgence to necessity. Self-care is about creating a foundation that allows us to continue engaging in the things that matter most to us.
