You need rest. You deserve rest, regardless of what you did or didn’t accomplish today. You don’t have to spend the rest of your existence struggling to recover from burnout or functioning on the brink of exhaustion.

Hustle culture tells you to push yourself to the limits, work as hard as you can, and that pausing for a break is weak or lazy. When we internalize those messages, we push ourselves to the extreme, whether it is over-working, not sleeping enough, over consuming stimulants or never taking days off. It isn’t always just work that we need a rest from, sometimes it is other people, or even just the overstimulation of noises and sensory input.

If we continue to push ourselves until our breaking point, we will do just that: break. Resting is often viewed as “a waste of time”, however, smaller consistent breaks end up taking less time away than crashing and burning does. When we don’t choose rest, our bodies will choose it for us.

 Intentionally ignoring your needs isn’t a badge of honor. It doesn’t make you more valuable. It doesn’t make you more successful (I mean, it might short term, but it's not long term sustainable).

Lack of rest can lead to irritation, burnout, and sheer exhaustion that impacts your physical, mental, and emotional health as well as your relationship with yourself and others.
